Ethiopia, Spain Women Parliamentarians Share Experiences
A team of members of the House of Peoples’ Representatives has held experience-sharing discussions with its Spain Counter part on the overall issues of women.
The discussion between the two parties was conducted in the premises of the House on 11th of October 2007.
Meanwhile, deputy Chairperson of Women’s Affairs Standing Committee,
hon. W/t Anchinalu Yigzaw has given explanations on the participation of women
parliamentarians in the House.
Accordingly, she stated that the number of women parliamentarians and their
overall participation in the House has grown significantly time and again.
The participation of women parliamentarians in the leadership position has also been growing while the women’s affairs standing committee of the House has been striving to ensure that women’s issues are addressed properly in all legislation enacted by the House, she said.
With regard to ensuring the respect of women’s rights, all standing committees of the House exert every effort in their bound during evaluation of performance reports of executive organs, to check whether women’s issues are given due considerations, she added.
Hon. W/t Anchinalu, at the end of the discussion said that the Ethiopian side has understood that Spain’s Women Parliamentarians are making elevated participation in the legislative process, following up of implementation of laws and in the leadership positions and that it is necessary to work to the grassroots level so as to make women beneficiaries.
Moreover, the discussion held on the activities carried out with regard to halting violation of the rights of women, the laws issued to protect illegal transfer of women and the granting of lawful protection enabled to acquire important experience that assists to intensify endeavors launched earlier.
The Chairperson has also expressed confidence that the bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Spain would further be strengthened, adding that much more experience sharing would be conducted at similar forums in the time to come.
Meantime, Speaker of Spain Socialist party, hon. Mrivi Montecirin who led the
Spanish delegation has explained extensively on the Participation of women in
the parliament of Spain, the consideration of gender issue as Topical agendum
in the parliament, the bilateral agreement between the two countries and on
issues of women, where as suggested that the experience sharing occasion between
the two parties would contribute much to work together in the future.
