Committee commends Ministry’s Performance Report

Committee said the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has taken encouraging policy and strategic measures to tackle inflation.

The Chairperson of Budget and Finance Affairs Standing Committee of the House the Hon. Ato Wana Wakie stated this while the committee heard the performance report of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and its accountable Agencies on May 14, 2008.


The Hon. Ato Wana explained that the Ministry has taken measures of monetary and fiscal policies as well as supply of food grains and edible oil with lower price to low-income society in view of decreasing adverse effect of the prevailing inflation especially in urban areas.

Besides, striving efforts of the Ministry to implement the civil service reform programme is encouraging and should continue strengthened, the Hon. Ato Wana underlined.

He added that the ministry should identify the balancing mechanisms of the current population explosion along with the existing economic growth of the county.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance and Economic Development his Excellency Ato Sofian Ahmed said that food grains, edible oil and sugar have been sold with low price to those with low income to combat inflation.

The economic development of Ethiopia is getting momentum from time to time in a promising way, his Excellency said.

The Ministry has realized the civil service reform programme in the ministry and seeking to impart enlightened lessons to the society about the adverse effects of population explosion, his Excellency underscored.

Ato Sofian also said that export trade has been highly increasing due to effective implementation of the designed plan of the ministry.

Meanwhile, several questions were raised by the committee and responses were given by Minister of Finance and Economic Development and officials of accountable Agencies to the ministry, it was learnt.
