Achievements of Commission said Commendable
Committee said that the Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has achieved encouraging results on the protection of corruption and malpractice.
The member of the Legal and Administrative Affairs Standing Committee of the House the Hon. Ato Hailu Berhe revealed this while concluding the 3rd quarter performance report of 2000 fiscal year of the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission heard by the House of Peoples’ Representatives in its 27th regular session held on April 29, 2008.
The Hon. Ato Hailu Berhe expressed that the Commission has built up institutional conviction to suit the court of law to properly handle crimes in corruption.
The commission has to maximize efforts with a view of effective utilization of budget, making laws that would enable the whistleblower to be protected by law the corrupted person, Ato Hailu underlined.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission Commissioner Ato Ali Suleyman stated that to tackle the adverse effects on the human rights of the citizen peace, democracy, development and good governance of the country, the commission has undertaken several ventures.
Moreover, the commission has implemented the Business Processing Reengineering Programme, quick wins, the objectives and responsibilities of the commission, the commissioner noted.
Besides, in order to enhance ethical education in the new Millennium, the commission has transmitted relevant lessons on electronic media, brochures, news letters, magazines, posters and calendars to the public on the motto of “Ethiopian Renaissance could not be obstacle by corruption”, the commissioner remarked.
Furthermore, the commission has made use of information from whistleblowers, instituted suits on the wrongdoer who committed the act of corruption, and passed decisions as well as investigating and introducing evidences for the pending cases, Ato Ali underscored.
With regard to trainings on anti-corruption and malpractice, Ato Ali said the commission has offered trainings to the investigators of the crime to build their capacity and enable them fight against corruption and malpractice.
The commission has also strengthened and supported Ethics and Anti-corruption commissions of Regional States, established clubs in universities, civil societies, and consolidate women and youth associations in order to boost their roles on corruption prevention, Commissioner underscored.
According to Ato Ali, many whistleblowers have come up with information about the corrupted individuals in such away that the awareness of the public about the adverse effects of corruption and malpractice has been increasing from time to time.
In order to create awareness on the employers and employees, the commission offered relevant lessons on HIV/ADIS, the report signifies.
According to the performance report, the Federal Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission has utilized 87.4% from the total allocated budget in the fiscal year.
Meanwhile, several questions were raised by the members of the House to which
responses were given by the Commissioner.
