COMMITTEE LAUDS THE NEED TO SPREAD CHILIMO
FORESTRY EXPERIENCE TO OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY
The national resources and environmental protection affairs standing committee
of the House lauded the need to spread the Chilimo Forestry scheme to other
parts of the country.
Chairperson of the committee hon. Ato Alemnew Getinet Said this at a discussion forum held on 18th of June proceeding committees visit of the chilimo forest, located about 120 K.ms south west of Addis Ababa,
According to the chairperson, the forestry scheme practiced at Chilimo forest with the joint participation of the local community and government bodies contributed to protect the forest from endangerement.
As it has been exemplary performance, the experience in participatory forest management scheme observed at Chilimo should be spread to other parts of the country so as to better manage the scarce resource of the country, he underscored.
The chairperson revealed that the bill on forestry is under consideration to fill the legislative gaps with a view to contribute to the efforts of afforestation.
During the discussion, the parliamentarians were enlightened on the mechanisms which enabled to restore the forest.
Meanwhile, it was said that the participatory forestry at chilimo has enabled
rehabilitate the forest and reduce the illegal deforestation activities as a
result of which the number of wild lives around the forest has significantly
been increased.
