A One-Day Training kicks off on Population Policy and Reproductive Health


It was expressed that the House of peoples’ Representatives should exert immense contributions to the effective implementation of the goals of population policy and reproductive health.

The Deputy speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, hon. W/ro Shitaye Minale remarked this on the opening speech of the training workshop held on 28 Dec. 2007 to sensitize and create awareness in the mind of members of the House as regards the implementation of the population policy and reproductive health in the grassroots level elsewhere in the country.

Hon. w/ro Shitaye Minale expressed that members of the House should have a lion share responsibility for the implementation of the population policy and reproductive health issues together with the government and stakeholders.

Besides, the efforts made by the government on the implementation of the population policy and reproductive health activities so as to enhance awareness upon the policy, family planning, improvement of economic, political and social as well as educational conditions of women and decreasing the children’s mortality and maternity rate are bearing fruits, she underscored.

She also added that the government has paid due attention to implement population policy and reproductive health issues so as to ensure sustainable development as stated in the five-year development strategic plan.

Moreover, she said proper implementation of the population policy and reproductive health activities would play pivotal roles to control population explosion, natural resources, economic development with population growth, and in improving the living standards of rural as well as urban dwellers.

The Deputy speaker underlined that population explosion results in-effective utilization of the environment, scarcity of resources, shortage of basic needs, and land degradation.

It was noted that the workshop organized by the Budget and Finance Affairs standing Committee of the House in collaboration with Ministry of Finance and Economic Development would discuss on different issues related to the main topics of the training workshop.
