Violence against Women Weakens Development endeavors

It was pronounced that the violence against women would harm the ongoing development process in the country.

The deputy speaker of the Haute of people’s Representatives hon. w/ro Shitaye Minale revealed this on 13 Dec. 2007 while addressing the gathering of Women’s march against gender violence drawn from all kebele of Addis Ababa City Administration adhering to the motto of “Stop violence against women in the new Ethiopian millennium” to show determination for the efforts launched and stop the gender violence occurring.

She added that gender violence doesn’t only cause harm on women but also on the whole society impeding the development endeavors undertaking in the country.

Moreover, the House of Peoples’ Representatives is responsible to follow and oversight implementation of legislations issued concerning protection of women’s right and accordingly women parliamentarians are performing related activities in this regards, Shetaye underlined.

The government is responsible for the implementation of legislations that would enable to protect violence against women. In addition, the government should bring the criminals who committed violence on women before the law, Shetaye said.

Chairperson of Addis Ababa women’s Association w/ro Tigu W/Senbet has remarked that the society should take preventive measures that would enable women participate in the development endeavors and democratization process.

Besides, she said that the march signifies that the violence committed on women should not be tolerated and be stopped in the new millennium.

Meanwhile, participants of the march have Presented their requests to the deputy Speaker for prompt and strong legal measures against those who commit violence against women.
