Untitled Document House Speaker says nation’s poverty reduction, development efforts exemplary


Ethiopia’s effort in poverty reduction, in ensuring democracy, development, peace and stability is exemplary to developing countered as well as to the Horn of Africa region, Ambassador Teshome Toga said.

The Honorable Speaker, Ambassador Teshome, was speaking at the on-going 118th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the International Convention Center of Cape Town, South Africa.

He said the sound policies and strategies formulated by the Government of Ethiopia to reduce poverty, curb unemployment and also improve the participation of the private sector are addressing the socio-economic problems of the country. It is exemplary to developing countries, he added.

By doing so, Ethiopia has registered remarkable results in expanding educational facilities and infrastructure, he told the meeting.

He said the effective implementation of poverty reduction and sustainable development policy has enabled the nation to register rapid economic growth that hits 12 per cent annually.

Encouraging results have been registered in building democracy, maintaining peace and stability in the country as well as in the Horn of Africa, he said, and added encouraging results have also been achieved in environmental protection activities.

The New Millennium would contribute to realize national vision set to make the nation among the middle income economies in a few years, Ambassador Teshome said.

The IPU Assembly is scheduled to conclude today.
