Flag
and Emblem of FDRE
The national flag of the FDRE has three horizontal colours
with green at the top, yellow in the middle and red at the bottom, and
bears an emblem sketched on blue circular background falling in its center.
The emblem is made of direct and equal converging lines in yellow and a
star illuminated by direct and equal lines in yellow jumping from converging
points is the line of a ray.

The Federal Democratic Repulic of Ethiopia ( FDRE)AreaEthiopia has an area of 1,112,000 square kilometres
of which 65 percent of the land is arable. Presently, it is estimated that
15 percent of the total is cultivated.PeopleEthiopia is a land of enormous ethnic diversity, with
people of Semitic, Cushitic, Nilotic and Omotic stock. There are
more than 80 ethnic groups and as many language. In terms of religion,
Christians and Muslims make up approximately 80% of the population each
(Christians being slightly more preponderant), the remaining 20% animists
and others. Under the new constitution, religious rights, and the
cultural and political rights of all ethnic groups are guaranteed.Capital
CityThe capital city of FDRE is Addis Ababa. It was founded
in 1883 by Emperor Minilik II. According to the 1994 census, its residents
are estimated to be 2.3 million.Official
LanguageEthiopia is a multi-ethnic state with a great variety
of languages spoken in the country, of which there are 83 with 200 dialects.
The main three languages are Amharic, Tigrigna and Oromifa. English
is also widely spoken.
Amharic is the official language of FDRE. Besides the
nine member states of the FDRE have the right to determine their working
languages.
ClimateThere are two seasons: the dry season prevails from
October through May; the wet seasons runs from June to September.
Economic Indicators
About 90 per cent of the population earn their living
from the land, mainly as subsistence farmers. Agriculture is the backbone
of the national economy and the principal exports from this sector are
coffee, oil seeds, and pulses, flowers, vegetables, sugar and foodstuffs
for animals. There is also a thriving livestock sector exporting cattle
and the hoof and hides and skins.Transport
and CommunicationRoads: there are some 4,1000 kilometres
of asphalt roads with a further 19, 000 kilometres of gravel and dry-weather
roads. Railway: A 778-kilometer long railway
line links Addis Ababa with Djibouti, and carries both freight and passengers. Air: Ethiopian Airlines has an extensive
domestic network flying to 43 airfields and an additional 21 landing strips.
New commercial air lines are also sprouting up thereby strengthening the
domestic flight service.Currency
UnitThe local currency is the Ethiopian Birr, made up of
100 cents. Foreign currency may only be changed at authorized
banks and hotels.
